What must a UK invoice include?

HMRC sets out specific requirements for invoices. All invoices must include:

  • A unique invoice number
  • Your business name and address
  • The client's name and address
  • The date the invoice was issued
  • A description of the goods or services provided
  • The amount charged

Additional requirements for VAT invoices

If you are VAT registered your invoices must also include:

  • Your VAT registration number
  • The VAT rate applied to each item
  • The net amount (excluding VAT)
  • The VAT amount
  • The gross total (including VAT)
  • The tax point (usually the invoice date)

We strongly recommend asking your accountant to check your invoice format before sending to clients, particularly if you are VAT registered. An incorrect VAT invoice could result in your client being unable to reclaim the VAT.

Invoice numbering

Invoice numbers must be sequential and unique. You can use any format — INV-001, 2025-001, or any other system — as long as each invoice has a different number and they are issued in order.

Payment terms

Standard payment terms in the UK are 30 days. If your invoice is not paid by the due date you have the right to charge statutory interest under the Late Payment Act. Use our Late Payment Calculator to work out how much you can claim.
