Everything you need to know about lost pensions

There are an estimated Β£26 billion of unclaimed pension savings in the UK. People lose track of pensions when they change jobs, move house or simply forget about old workplace schemes.

How many lost pensions could you have?

The average UK worker changes job 11 times in their career. Since auto-enrolment began in 2012, every qualifying job creates a new pension pot. If you have worked for several employers since then, you likely have multiple pots β€” some forgotten.

What if the company no longer exists?

If your old employer has closed, the pension scheme may still exist independently. If the employer went insolvent and could not pay a defined benefit pension, the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) may cover your entitlement.

Should you consolidate your pensions?

Consolidating small pots can simplify management and reduce charges β€” but always check for valuable guarantees like guaranteed annuity rates before transferring. Speak to a regulated financial adviser first.

Pension scams warning

Be very cautious about unsolicited contact from companies offering to trace or transfer your pension. Always check a firm is FCA authorised at register.fca.org.uk before engaging.
